Who Pays for Towing?
This is a tricky question as the answer depends on several different factors which include:
- Fault: Generally speaking, the insurance company for the individual who caused the accident should pay for towing. However, this is not always the case. Insurance companies often deny fault or conduct an investigation before accepting fault. If an insurance company denies fault, it is not likely a payment by the company will take place.
- Time: Towing company fees quickly add up. Not only do towing fees include the costs of the tow itself, but there are usually hefty fees charged on a daily basis to keep the vehicle in the towing company’s storage lot. This is one reason why many pay the costs of towing without waiting for an insurance company to accept fault.
- Amount of fees: Even if the at-fault party’s insurance company accepts fault after the accident, the insurance company will sometimes deny payment if they believe the costs are unreasonable. Some reasons cited include the towing fees or daily storage fees being unreasonably high or leaving the motor vehicle in storage for an unreasonably long amount of time.
Some individuals find that they are more inclined to go through their own insurance to pay the costs of towing. The ability to do this will largely depend on the type of insurance and whether it covers towing. When going through your own insurance, you will be responsible to satisfy any out-of-pocket deductible.
